Background: | This gene encodes a member of the claudin family. Claudins are integral membrane proteins and components of tight junction strands. Tight junction strands serve as a physical barrier to prevent solutes and water from passing freely through the paracellular space between epithelial or endothelial cell sheets. Mutations in this gene have been found in patients with velocardiofacial syndrome. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found for this gene. |
UniProt Protein Function: | Claudin-5: Plays a major role in tight junction-specific obliteration of the intercellular space. Belongs to the claudin family. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:Cytoskeletal; Membrane protein, integral; Membrane protein, multi-pass Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 22q11.21 Cellular Component: apicolateral plasma membrane; cortical actin cytoskeleton; integral to membrane; intercellular junction; plasma membrane; tight junction Molecular Function:identical protein binding Biological Process: calcium-independent cell-cell adhesion; intercellular junction assembly; learning; palate development; transforming growth factor beta receptor signaling pathway |
