Urea (BUN) Quick Test Strips (BA0203) (BA0203)
The Urea (BUN) Quick Test Strips (SKU: BA0203) provide a rapid, instrument-free method for estimating urea or blood urea nitrogen concentrations in biological and food samples. Urea is the major end product of protein catabolism in animals, produced primarily in the liver and secreted by the kidneys as the principal vehicle for removing toxic ammonia from the body. It is also widely used in agriculture as a fertiliser and animal feed additive, and milk urea is often monitored to gauge dietary protein. These strips are based on urease-catalysed conversion of urea to ammonium and carbon dioxide, with the pH change monitored by a chromogen to give a colour proportional to the urea concentration. Results are read by comparing the developed reaction pad against a reference chart and multiplying by the dilution factor, allowing rapid and inexpensive determination without sophisticated laboratory instruments.

These test strips estimate urea semi-quantitatively using urease-catalysed conversion of urea to ammonium and carbon dioxide, with the resulting pH change monitored by a chromogen. Sample is applied directly to the strip reaction pad (undiluted) or after dilution in the supplied tube, colour is allowed to develop for five minutes and the reaction pad is compared against the provided urea chart. The reading is multiplied by the dilution factor (e.g. 2x, 31x or 1 for undiluted samples) to obtain the urea concentration, which can be converted to BUN.

| Step | Procedure |
| 1 | For samples that do not require dilution, transfer 20 µL of sample directly onto the strip reaction pad using a 20 µL transfer pipette or pipettor, then proceed to the colour development step. |
| 2 | For samples requiring a 2x dilution, transfer 20 µL of dH2O into an empty Dilution tube using a 20 µL transfer pipette, then add 20 µL of sample using the same pipette. For samples requiring a 31x dilution, transfer a total of 600 µL of dH2O into an empty Dilution tube using a 300 µL transfer pipette twice, then add 20 µL of sample using a 20 µL transfer pipette. |
| 3 | Replace the cap, close securely and invert the vial a couple of times to mix the diluted sample. |
| 4 | Unscrew the cap and use a new 20 µL transfer pipette to transfer 20 µL of the diluted sample directly onto the strip reaction pad. |
| 5 | Shake the strip a couple of times to remove any clinging drops and let the colour develop for 5 minutes. |
| 6 | Compare the colour of the reaction pad with the provided Urea Chart on the test strip bag and multiply the concentration by the dilution used (i.e. 2x, 31x or 1 for undiluted samples) to determine the urea concentration in the sample. |
Read the urea concentration by comparing the developed reaction pad against the provided Urea Chart, then multiply the chart value by the dilution factor used (2x, 31x or 1 for undiluted samples). Conversions: BUN (mg/L) = [Urea] (mg/L) / 2.14; 1 mg/L urea equals 0.1 mg/dL, 16.7 µM, 0.0001% or 1 ppm.
