The protein S100A4 encodes a calcium-binding protein with two EF-hand calcium-binding motifs that is part of the S100 family. S100 proteins are present in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of a wide range of cells, and they regulate a variety of cellular activities including cell cycle progression and differentiation. Approximately 13 gene family members are included in the S100 family, all of which are concentrated on chromosome 1q21. Tubulin polymerization and motility are all enabled by this protein. S100A4 has been linked to tumor metastasis via chromosomal rearrangements and altered expression. Bile duct adenocarcinoma and small intestine adenocarcinoma are S100A4-related malignancies. Lipid, Ca and cAMP Signaling are just a few of the associated pathways to S100A4.
