Background: | The protein encoded by this gene is similar to the protein transgelin, which is one of the earliest markers of differentiated smooth muscle. The specific function of this protein has not yet been determined, although it is thought to be a tumor suppressor. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. |
UniProt Protein Function: | TAGLN2: a cytoskeletal protein of the calponin family. One of the earliest markers of differentiated smooth muscle. Expressed in the smooth, cardiac, and skeletal muscle cells during early embryogenesis. Becomes restricted to vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells in late fetal development and adulthood. Its expression is abolished by activated Ras. Ras-dependent and Ras-independent mechanisms can cause the down-regulation of transgelin in breast and colon cancer cells lines and tumor samples. |
