DNMT1 (DNA methyltransferase 1) is the primary enzyme responsible for maintaining DNA methylation patterns during cell division. In the nervous system, DNMT1 regulates gene expression, synaptic plasticity, and neuronal differentiation through epigenetic mechanisms. Aberrant DNMT1 activity has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases, where altered methylation contributes to transcriptional silencing of neuroprotective genes and activation of pathogenic pathways.
