Background: | The WNT gene family consists of structurally related genes which encode secreted signaling proteins. These proteins have been implicated in oncogenesis and in several developmental processes, including regulation of cell fate and patterning during embryogenesis. This gene is a member of the WNT gene family, and may be implicated in development of early embryos as well as germ cell tumors. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene. |
Synonyms: | wingless-type MMTV integration site family, member 8A |
UniProt Protein Function: | WNT8A: Ligand for members of the frizzled family of seven transmembrane receptors. May play an important role in the development and differentiation of certain forebrain structures, notably the hippocampus. Belongs to the Wnt family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.Protein type: Secreted; Secreted, signal peptide; Extracellular matrixChromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 5q31Cellular Component: extracellular space; proteinaceous extracellular matrix; extracellular regionMolecular Function: frizzled binding; receptor agonist activityBiological Process: neuron differentiation; response to retinoic acid; neural crest cell fate commitment; palate development; Wnt receptor signaling pathway through beta-catenin |
