| Background: | Synaptotagmin-2 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SYT2 gene. Synaptotagmins, like SYT2, are integral membrane proteins of synaptic vesicles thought to serve as Ca(2+) sensors in the process of vesicular trafficking and exocytosis. May have a regulatory role in the membrane interactions during trafficking of synaptic vesicles at the active zone of the synapse. It binds acid, c phospholipids with a specificity that requires the presence of both an acid, c head group and a diacyl backbone. |
| Synonyms: | synaptotagmin II |
| UniProt Protein Function: | SYT2: May have a regulatory role in the membrane interactions during trafficking of synaptic vesicles at the active zone of the synapse. It binds acidic phospholipids with a specificity that requires the presence of both an acidic head group and a diacyl backbone. Belongs to the synaptotagmin family. |

| NCBI Summary: | This gene encodes a synaptic vesicle membrane protein. The encoded protein is thought to function as a calcium sensor in vesicular trafficking and exocytosis. Mutations in this gene are associated with myasthenic syndrome, presynaptic, congenital, with or without motor neuropathy. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
