Background: | The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) family. PTPs are known to be signaling molecules that regulate a variety of cellular processes including cell growth, differentiation, mitotic cycle, and oncogenic transformation. This PTP possesses an extracellular region, a single transmembrane region, and two tandem intracellular catalytic domains, and thus represents a receptor-type PTP. The extracellular region contains a meprin-A5 antigen-PTP (MAM) domain, Ig-like and fibronectin type III-like repeats. The protein domain structure and the expression pattern of the mouse counterpart of this PTP suggest its roles in both signal transduction and cellular adhesion in the central nervous system. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants of this gene, which encode distinct proteins, have been reported. |
Synonyms: | Protein tyrosine phosphatase, receptor type, T |
UniProt Protein Function: | RRAD: a small G protein of the RGK family. May play an important role in cardiac antiarrhythmia via the strong suppression of voltage-gated L-type Ca(2+) currents. Regulates voltage-dependent L-type calcium channel subunit alpha- 1C trafficking to the cell membrane. Inhibits cardiac hypertrophy through the calmodulin-dependent kinase II (CaMKII) pathway. Interacts with calmodulin preferentially in the inactive, GDP-bound form. Interacts with CAMK2D and CACNB2. Interaction with CACNB2 regulates the trafficking of CACNA1C to the cell membrane. Most abundantly expressed in the heart. Also found in the skeletal muscle and lung. Lesser amounts in placenta and kidney. Also detected in adipose tissue. Overexpressed in muscle of type II diabetic humans.Protein type: G protein, monomeric, RGK; G protein; G protein, monomericChromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 16q22Cellular Component: plasma membraneMolecular Function: calmodulin binding; GTPase activity; protein binding; GTP bindingBiological Process: metabolic process; small GTPase mediated signal transduction |
