Background: | Proteins of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix for both normal physiological processes, such as embryonic development, reproduction and tissue remodeling, and disease processes, such as asthma and metastasis. This gene encodes a secreted enzyme that degrades casein. Its expression pattern suggests that it plays a role in tissue homeostasis and in wound repair. Transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described. |
Synonyms: | matrix metallopeptidase 28 |
UniProt Protein Function: | MMP28: Can degrade casein. Could play a role in tissues homeostasis and repair. Belongs to the peptidase M10A family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:Secreted, signal peptide; Protease; EC 3.4.24.-; Secreted; Motility/polarity/chemotaxis Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 17q12 Cellular Component: proteinaceous extracellular matrix; cytoplasm Molecular Function:zinc ion binding; metalloendopeptidase activity; calcium ion binding Biological Process: proteolysis |
NCBI Summary: | Proteins of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix for both normal physiological processes, such as embryonic development, reproduction and tissue remodeling, and disease processes, such as asthma and metastasis. This gene encodes a secreted enzyme that degrades casein. Its expression pattern suggests that it plays a role in tissue homeostasis and in wound repair. Alternative splicing of this gene results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Apr 2014] |
