UniProt Protein Function: | MED8: Component of the Mediator complex, a coactivator involved in the regulated transcription of nearly all RNA polymerase II-dependent genes. Mediator functions as a bridge to convey information from gene-specific regulatory proteins to the basal RNA polymerase II transcription machinery. Mediator is recruited to promoters by direct interactions with regulatory proteins and serves as a scaffold for the assembly of a functional preinitiation complex with RNA polymerase II and the general transcription factors. May play a role as a target recruitment subunit in E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase complexes and thus in ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation of target proteins. Belongs to the Mediator complex subunit 8 family. 3 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 1p34.2Cellular Component: nucleoplasm; Srb-mediator complexMolecular Function: protein bindingBiological Process: transcription initiation from RNA polymerase II promoter |

NCBI Summary: | This gene encodes a protein component of the mediator complex, which aids in transcriptional activation through interaction with RNA polymerase II and gene-specific transcription factors. The encoded protein may also function in ubiquitin ligation and protein degradation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed for this gene.
