Background: | Voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels represent the most complex class of voltage-gated ion channels from both functional and structural standpoints. Their diverse functions include regulating neurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume. This gene encodes a member of the potassium channel, voltage-gated, subfamily G. This member is a γ subunit functioning as a modulatory molecule. |
Synonyms: | potassium voltage-gated channel, subfamily G, member 3 |
UniProt Protein Function: | KCNG3: Potassium channel subunit. Modulates channel activity. Belongs to the potassium channel family. G (TC 1.A.1.2) subfamily. Kv6.3/KCNG3 sub-subfamily. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.Protein type: Membrane protein, multi-pass; Membrane protein, integralChromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 2p21Cellular Component: endoplasmic reticulum; plasma membrane; voltage-gated potassium channel complexMolecular Function: delayed rectifier potassium channel activity; protein binding |

NCBI Summary: | Voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels represent the most complex class of voltage-gated ion channels from both functional and structural standpoints. This gene encodes a member of the potassium channel, voltage-gated, subfamily G. This member is a gamma subunit functioning as a modulatory molecule. Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008] |
