The VILIP1/VSNL1 gene belongs to the visinin/recoverin family of calcium sensor proteins present in neurons. VILIP1/VSNL1 is highly expressed in cerebellar granule cells, where it creates calcium-dependent associations with membranes and modulates intracellular signalling pathways in the central nervous system by regulating adenylyl cyclase activity. VSNL1 has been linked to two neurological diseases: acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion, and alzheimer's disease.
