S100-A7 belongs to the S100 family and has two EF-hand calcium-binding motifs. The reduced calcium binding capacity of one EF-hand at the N-terminus distinguishes S100-A7 from other S100 proteins with known structures. The S100b-A7 protein is a key regulator of many cellular processes, including cell cycle progression and differentiation. S100-A7, is overproduced in hyperproliferative skin disorders and has antibacterial and immunomodulatory properties against bacteria. S100-A7 has been linked to bladder cancer and anal fistula in several studies. S100-A7 regulates two separate pathways: transcriptional repression and the innate immune system.
