RAB23 belongs to the Rab family of proteins and is restricted to the cytoplasmic side of the cell membrane. RAB23 takes part in intracellular protein transportation and signal transduction facilitated by small GTPases. RAB23 is a vital negative regulator of the Sonic hedgehog signaling pathway. Alterations in the gene encoding RAB23 are the origin for Carpenter syndrome a disorder which can cause obesity, cardiac defects, polysyndactyly and craniosynostosis.
RAB23 Human Recombinant produced in E.coli is a single, non-glycosylated polypeptide chain containing 254 amino acids (1-234) and having a molecular mass of 28.5 kDa.RAB23 is fused to a 20 amino acid His-tag at N-terminus & purified by proprietary chromatographic techniques.
UniProt Protein Function: | RAB23: Defects in RAB23 are the cause of acrocephalopolysyndactyly type 2 (ACPS2). A syndrome characterized by craniosynostosis, polysyndactyly, obesity, and cardiac defects. Belongs to the small GTPase superfamily. Rab family. |

NCBI Summary: | This gene encodes a small GTPase of the Ras superfamily. Rab proteins are involved in the regulation of diverse cellular functions associated with intracellular membrane trafficking, including autophagy and immune response to bacterial infection. The encoded protein may play a role in central nervous system development by antagonizing sonic hedgehog signaling. Disruption of this gene has been implicated in Carpenter syndrome as well as cancer. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2013] |
