At least 23 distinct types of IFN-alpha have been discovered. The 19-26 kDa proteins are made up of proteins with a length of 156-166 and 172 amino acids. The amino-terminal ends of IFN-alpha subtypes are variable, but the conserved sequence region between amino acid positions 115 and 151 is shared by all IFN-alpha subtypes. The IFN-alpha subtypes can vary by only a few residues in their DNA sequences. Proteins that have been modified by a single nucleotide are known as natural variants.
