Fibroblast growth factor 4(FGF-4) is a heparin binding member of the FGF family. The human FGF4 gene contains 206 amino acids (aa) with a 33-amino acid signal sequence and a 173-amino acid mature protein with an FGF homology domain that has a heparin binding region near the C-terminus. The mature human FGF4 protein has 91%, 82%, 94% and 91% aa identity with mouse, rat, canine and bovine FGF4, respectively. Human FGF-4 has been found to have cross species effects. During embryonic development, the expression of FGF-4 and its receptors FGF R1c, 2c, 3c, and 4 is spatially and temporally regulated. FGF-4 is proposed to play a physiologically relevant role in human embryonic stem cell self-renewal. It encourages stem cell proliferation, but it may also help to differentiate depending on the situation and concentration, and is frequently used in stem cell media in vitro. In vitro, it is mitogenic for fibroblasts and endothelial cells, and has autocrine transforming potential. In addition, it has been studied as a treatment for coronary artery disease and is a strong angiogenesis inducer in animals. Human FGF-4/FGF4 Recombinant Protein is a highly pure recombinant protein developed by Assay Genie for use in a range of applications.
Measured in a cell proliferation assay using BALB/c 3T3 cells. The ED50 for this effect is 4.4 ng/ml.
