Ephrin type-B receptor 4 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the EPHB4 gene. It is a single-pass type I membrane protein of the ephrin receptor subfamily in the protein kinase superfamily. Members of the ephrin and Eph families are mainly contact-dependent local mediators in development and maturity that regulate cell function by means of largely contact-dependent mechanisms. Furthermore, EphB4 protein and its ligand Ephrin-B2 promote tumour growth in several human cancer types. EphB4 protein has tumour suppressing potential and cell proliferation control, as well as extracellular matrix remodelling and invasive capability. Therefore; Ephrin-B2/EphB4 may be recognized as a novel prognostic indicator for cancers.
