Background: | This gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes, which participate in drug metabolism and the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids and other lipids. This enzyme hydroxylates testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone 3-sulphate, which is involved in the formation of estriol during pregnancy. This gene is part of a cluster of related genes on chromosome 7q21.1. Naturally-occurring readthrough transcription occurs between this gene and the downstream CYP3AP1 pseudogene and is represented by GeneID:100861540. |
Synonyms: | Cytochrome P450; family 3; subfamily A; polypeptide 7; CYP3A7 |
UniProt Protein Function: | CYP3A7: Cytochromes P450 are a group of heme-thiolate monooxygenases. In liver microsomes, this enzyme is involved in an NADPH-dependent electron transport pathway. It oxidizes a variety of structurally unrelated compounds, including steroids, fatty acids, and xenobiotics. Belongs to the cytochrome P450 family.Protein type: Xenobiotic Metabolism - metabolism by cytochrome P450; Oxidoreductase; Xenobiotic Metabolism - drug metabolism - cytochrome P450; Lipid Metabolism - linoleic acid; Xenobiotic Metabolism - drug metabolism - other enzymes; Cofactor and Vitamin Metabolism - retinol; EC 1.14.14.1Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 7q22.1Cellular Component: endoplasmic reticulum membraneMolecular Function: iron ion binding; heme binding; oxygen binding; monooxygenase activityBiological Process: xenobiotic metabolic process |
