Background: | This gene encodes a component of the interphase centromere complex. The encoded protein is localized to the centromere throughout the cell cycle and is required for bipolar spindle assembly, chromosome segregation and checkpoint signaling during mitosis. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple protein isoforms have been observed for this gene. |
Synonyms: | centromere protein O |
UniProt Protein Function: | CENPO: Component of the CENPA-CAD (nucleosome distal) complex, a complex recruited to centromeres which is involved in assembly of kinetochore proteins, mitotic progression and chromosome segregation. May be involved in incorporation of newly synthesized CENPA into centromeres via its interaction with the CENPA-NAC complex. Modulates the kinetochore-bound levels of NDC80 complex. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.Protein type: Unknown functionChromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 2p23.3Cellular Component: cytosol; nucleoplasmMolecular Function: protein bindingBiological Process: DNA replication-independent nucleosome assembly at centromere; sister chromatid cohesion |
