Background: | This gene encodes an enzyme that belongs to the methyltransferase family. The encoded protein catalyzes the transfer of methyl groups to the amino acid arginine, in target proteins that include histones, transcriptional elongation factors and the tumor suppressor p53. This gene plays a role in several cellular processes, including transcriptional regulation, and the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins. A pseudogene of this gene has been defined on chromosome 4. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. |
UniProt Protein Function: | PRMT5: an ubiquitous enzyme with protein methyltransferase activity. Methylates specific arginine residues in the transcription elongation factor SPT5, and the small nuclear ribonucleoproteins SNRPD1 and SNRPD3. Plays a role in the assembly of snRNP core particles. May play a role in cytokine-activated transduction pathways. Negatively regulates cyclin E1 promoter activity and cellular proliferation. May regulate the SPT5 transcriptional elongation properties. May be part of a pathway that is connected to a chloride current, possibly through cytoskeletal rearrangement. Component of the methylosome, a 20S complex that includes ICLN, SKB1 and WDR77. Component of a high molecular weight E2F-pocket protein complex, CERC (cyclin E1 repressor complex). Also interacts with Sm proteins, JAK2, SSTR1 and SPT5. Associates with SWI/SNF remodeling complexes containing SMARCA2 and SMARCA4. |
