| Background: | This gene encodes a member of the PIWI subfamily of Argonaute family proteins. This subfamily of proteins contains a PAZ domain, found in proteins involved in RNA-mediated gene silencing, and a C-terminal Piwi domain. The encoded protein is thought to function in maintenance of germline cells. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. |

Inhibits signaling mediated by TGF-beta family proteins possibly indirectly by degradation of these ECM proteoglycans. May act as a tumor suppressor. Negatively regulates, in vitro, trophoblast invasion during placental development and may be involved in the development of the placenta in vivo. May also have a role in ovarian development, granulosa cell differentiation and luteinization. Belongs to the peptidase S1B family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. |
