Background: | The protein encoded by this gene is a ubiquitous actin monomer-binding protein belonging to the profilin family. It is thought to regulate actin polymerization in response to extracellular signals. There are two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms described for this gene. |
UniProt Protein Function: | profilin 2: Binds to actin and affects the structure of the cytoskeleton. At high concentrations, profilin prevents the polymerization of actin, whereas it enhances it at low concentrations. By binding to PIP2, it inhibits the formation of IP3 and DG. Belongs to the profilin family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:Motility/polarity/chemotaxis; Actin-binding Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 3q25.1 Cellular Component: cytoskeleton; cytoplasm; terminal button Molecular Function:actin monomer binding; protein binding; phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate binding; adenyl-nucleotide exchange factor activity Biological Process: positive regulation of actin filament polymerization; positive regulation of ATPase activity; negative regulation of actin filament polymerization; positive regulation of stress fiber formation; positive regulation of actin filament bundle formation; actin cytoskeleton organization and biogenesis; positive regulation of peptidyl-serine phosphorylation |
NCBI Summary: | The protein encoded by this gene is a ubiquitous actin monomer-binding protein belonging to the profilin family. It is thought to regulate actin polymerization in response to extracellular signals. There are two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms described for this gene.
