Background: | The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the innexin family. Innexin family members are the structural components of gap junctions. This protein and pannexin 2 are abundantly expressed in central nerve system (CNS) and are coexpressed in various neuronal populations. Studies in Xenopus oocytes suggest that this protein alone and in combination with pannexin 2 may form cell type-specific gap junctions with distinct properties. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008] |
UniProt Protein Function: | PANX1: Structural component of the gap junctions and the hemichannels. May play a role as a Ca(2+)-leak channel to regulate ER Ca(2+) homeostasis. Belongs to the pannexin family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:Cell adhesion; Membrane protein, multi-pass; Membrane protein, integral Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 11q21 Cellular Component: endoplasmic reticulum membrane; protein complex; membrane; endoplasmic reticulum; integral to membrane; plasma membrane; gap junction Molecular Function:actin filament binding; protease binding; leak channel activity; protein heterodimerization activity; gap junction hemi-channel activity; calcium channel activity; receptor binding Biological Process: positive regulation of interleukin-1 alpha secretion; synaptic transmission; calcium ion transport; innate immune response; positive regulation of interleukin-1 beta secretion; cation transport; response to ATP |
