Background: | Myosin, a structural component of muscle, consists of two heavy chains and four light chains. The protein encoded by this gene is a myosin light chain that may regulate muscle contraction by modulating the ATPase activity of myosin heads. The encoded protein binds calcium and is activated by myosin light chain kinase. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008] |
UniProt Protein Function: | MRLC1: Myosin regulatory subunit that plays an important role in regulation of both smooth muscle and nonmuscle cell contractile activity via its phosphorylation. Implicated in cytokinesis, receptor capping, and cell locomotion. Myosin is an hexamer of 2 heavy chains and 4 light chains. Smooth muscle tissues and in some, but not all, nonmuscle cells. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:Contractile; Motility/polarity/chemotaxis Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 20q11.23 Cellular Component: cytosol; muscle myosin complex; stress fiber; Z disc Molecular Function:calcium ion binding; myosin heavy chain binding; structural constituent of muscle Biological Process: axon guidance; ephrin receptor signaling pathway; muscle contraction; regulation of muscle contraction; small GTPase mediated signal transduction |
