Background: | Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and help in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes, where this ratio is reversed. Another difference between mammalian mitoribosomes and prokaryotic ribosomes is that the latter contain a 5S rRNA. Among different species, the proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ greatly in sequence, and sometimes in biochemical properties, which prevents easy recognition by sequence homology. This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein that has had confusing nomenclature in the literature. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. Pseudogenes corresponding to this gene are found on chromosomes 3p, 5q, and 10q. |
UniProt Protein Function: | TMEPAI: Involved in down-regulation of the androgen receptor (AR). Enhances ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation of AR, probably by recruiting NEDD4. Belongs to the PMEPA1 family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:Membrane protein, integral Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 20q13.31-q13.33 Cellular Component: Golgi membrane; early endosome membrane; integral to membrane; plasma membrane; endosome membrane Molecular Function:protein binding; WW domain binding Biological Process: transforming growth factor beta receptor signaling pathway; androgen receptor signaling pathway; negative regulation of transforming growth factor beta receptor signaling pathway |
NCBI Summary: | This gene encodes a transmembrane protein that contains a Smad interacting motif (SIM). Expression of this gene is induced by androgens and transforming growth factor beta, and the encoded protein suppresses the androgen receptor and transforming growth factor beta signaling pathways though interactions with Smad proteins. Overexpression of this gene may play a role in multiple types of cancer. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed for this gene.
