Background: | This gene encodes a member of the peroxidase family of proteins. The encoded preproprotein is proteolytically processed to generate the mature enzyme. Following its secretion from salivary, mammary, and other mucosal glands, this enzyme catalyzes the generation of the antimicrobial substance hypothiocyanous acid. This gene is present in a gene cluster on chromosome 17. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, at least one of which encodes a preproprotein that is proteolytically processed. |
UniProt Protein Function: | LPO: May contribute to airway host defense against infection. Belongs to the peroxidase family. XPO subfamily. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:Secreted, signal peptide; Oxidoreductase; EC 1.11.1.7; Secreted Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 17q23.1 Cellular Component: extracellular space; basolateral plasma membrane; cytoplasm Molecular Function:metal ion binding; heme binding Biological Process: hydrogen peroxide catabolic process; defense response to bacterium; thiocyanate metabolic process; response to oxidative stress; detection of chemical stimulus involved in sensory perception of bitter taste |
NCBI Summary: | This gene encodes an oxidoreductase secreted from salivary, mammary, and other mucosal glands that functions as a natural antibacterial agent. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, May 2009] |
