Background: | The protein encoded by this gene acts as a heterodimer with kinesin family member 3A to aid in chromosome movement during mitosis and meiosis. The encoded protein is a plus end-directed microtubule motor and can interact with the SMC3 subunit of the cohesin complex. In addition, the encoded protein may be involved in the intracellular movement of membranous organelles. This protein and kinesin family member 3A form the kinesin II subfamily of the kinesin superfamily. |
UniProt Protein Function: | KIF3B: Involved in tethering the chromosomes to the spindle pole and in chromosome movement. Microtubule-based anterograde translocator for membranous organelles. Plus end-directed microtubule sliding activity in vitro. Belongs to the kinesin-like protein family. Kinesin II subfamily. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:Microtubule-binding; Motor Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 20q11.21 Cellular Component: cytosol; kinesin II complex; membrane; microtubule cytoskeleton; plus-end kinesin complex Molecular Function:microtubule motor activity; plus-end-directed microtubule motor activity; protein binding; Rho GTPase binding Biological Process: anterograde axon cargo transport; antigen processing and presentation of exogenous peptide antigen via MHC class II; determination of left/right symmetry; microtubule-based movement; mitotic centrosome separation; mitotic spindle organization and biogenesis; retrograde vesicle-mediated transport, Golgi to ER |
