Background: | Encodes HTA9, a histone H2A protein. Loss of all H2A.Z (triple mutant with HTA8 and HTA11) results in a reduction in DNA methylation of transposons but not that of genes. Loss of H2A.Z causes misregulation of many genes involved in the response to developmental and environmental cues, and that these genes tend to have high levels of gene-body H2A.Z. |
UniProt Protein Function: | Variant histones H2A are synthesized throughout the cell cycle and are very different from classical S-phase regulated H2A. May replace conventional H2A in a subset of nucleosomes. Nucleosomes wrap and compact DNA into chromatin, limiting DNA accessibility to the cellular machineries which require DNA as a template. Histones thereby play a central role in transcription regulation, DNA repair, DNA replication and chromosomal stability. DNA accessibility is regulated via a complex set of post-translational modifications of histones, also called histone code, and nucleosome remodeling. |
