Background: | This gene encodes a member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family of proteins. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, at least one of which encodes a preproprotein that is proteolytically processed to generate the secreted growth factor. A secreted form and a membrane-anchored form of this protein bind to multiple different EGF receptors. This protein promotes pancreatic cell proliferation and insulin secretion, as well as retinal vascular permeability. Mutations in this gene may be associated with type 2 diabetes in human patients. |
UniProt Protein Function: | BTC: Growth factor that binds to EGFR, ERBB4 and other EGF receptor family members. Potent mitogen for retinal pigment epithelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:Ligand, receptor tyrosine kinase; Cell cycle regulation; Membrane protein, integral Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 4q13.3 Cellular Component: extracellular space; plasma membrane; integral to membrane; extracellular region Molecular Function:protein binding; growth factor activity; epidermal growth factor receptor binding Biological Process: epidermal growth factor receptor signaling pathway; positive regulation of fibroblast proliferation; phosphoinositide-mediated signaling; fibroblast growth factor receptor signaling pathway; nerve growth factor receptor signaling pathway; positive regulation of mitosis; positive regulation of cell proliferation; innate immune response; positive regulation of cell differentiation; negative regulation of apoptosis |
NCBI Summary: | The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the EGF family of growth factors. It is synthesized primarily as a transmembrane precursor, which is then processed to mature molecule by proteolytic events. This protein is a ligand for the EGF receptor.
